Theft Of Tailgates Becoming A Problem

Reports from detnews.com states that there has been an alarming rate of tailgate thefts around the Detroit Metro area.  This seemingly low profile crime has been flying under the radar, due to people not wanting to pay deductibles and higher insurance rates.  With minimal reports, the police are at a standstill in the investigation.  The crimes have no pattern and seem to be random acts of theft.  Authorities say they haven’t caught anyone in the act of the theft and that the crooks are hard to catch.  The thieves come out at night and can have a tailgate off in as little as a couple seconds up to a few minutes.

Tailgates cost on average $1,200 to replace, but some up to $3,600.  People can purchase tailgates online or at shady dealers for as little as a few hundred dollars.  People are literally buying their stolen tailgates back.

Terry Hibdon, the owner of Hibdon Motor Sales in Clinton Township has taken some drastic precautions to ensure he doesn’t become a victim.  He started backing the trucks in his lot up against his building, allowing no room for the thieves.  He has gone so far as taking the tailgates off of some of his trucks.  He say’s “I hate to present the trucks that way, but that’s the way things are.”
