Installed in 30 minutes and worked great for one week. Unfortunately it has repeatedly popped loose multiple times. The female ends on the shock won't stay on the ball mounts.
everyone should have one
Very simple to install. The locking piece that goes into hole in your tailgate can be a pain. Have used same locking device from other manufacturers and is a pain to get locked from them also with the wrench and hex key. Other wise works awesome and is nice not having your tailgate slam down or having to hold it when it opens.
the head of the shock scratches the side of the tailgate. talked to tech services at DEE ZEE the claim this is normal variation from vehicle to vehicle. it could be easily redesigned to fit. would not recommend
I chose to view the YouTube installation clip and it made it a snap to install the Dee Zee Tailgate Assist on my 2015 F250 Super Duty. I love it and my wife finds it so much easier to open.
It is nice to unlatch your truck tailgate and just let it drop, especially if it is a quite heavy tailgate like on my Silverado. But this tailgate assist only assists on the last couple of inches of drop. Some people reported that it did that for them when they first installed it but it got better after awhile. Not so with mine. It still drops unassisted until the last few inches. But, it then does the assist and stops any violent crash at the bottom.
And, unfortunately, it does NOT give any assist in lifting a very heavy tailgate. I still need both arms to lift my tailgate back closed.
Installing the Tailgate Assist was a very frustrating job that took me hours. The first step is to install a "molly" like fitting into a hole in the tailgate to become a firm connection point for the bottom of the shock absorber. This uses a bolt that has on it two plates with ball bearings between so that when you turn the hex bolt the body stays firm and the inside "logs" spread. My ball bearings were defective and the whole assemble turned and the inside legs never spread. I finally had to get real creative with vise grips to ever get the legs spread inside and a firm connection made. This was real hard to do when the fitting with a narrow lip had to be firm to the surface on the side of the tailgate. (If you don't know what a molly is, it is a fitting that is usually used on sheet rock to make a firm, permanent bolt hole on a hallow wall where there are legs on a cylinder that when you turn a screw that sticks through the assemble, it causes the legs to fold back to the wall making a firm, permanent connection where you can screw things to the wall).
If I were to install another one I would go with a different brand that had a better type of molly bolt.
So good I got one for my son in law
Easy for my wife to open the tailgate now with one hand!
We love it. Very easy to install.
