The light was very easy to install, took 10 minutes. I am not sure it is really worth $114, but I was not good enough with the Nite Shades to black out my factory break light.
This is a grat product and RealTruck is the place to buy, I have had no problems with the light other than its not a easy installation process like the company says it is. When I purchased the light the description said installed to factory plug in, but that is not the case. You must strip your factory wires and and hard wire the LED lights into your wire harness. I was hesitant to strip my factory wires on a relatively new truck, but my factor 3rd brake light was leaking water into the cab so I decided to give it a try. The LED light looks great and has a very durable seal and have had no further problems with water leaks with this products.
First off... no matter what you do on an F150, you are going to have to cut wires. So, whether it is Recon or any other manufacturer, you have to do the same thing. I went with Recon because I have put lights on a few ford trucks and Recon has the best fit and finish of any brand.
I took one star off the installation because I think Recon could do better by providing a crimp style male and female connector for the wires.
Why the connector? I put Recon lights on my previous truck and they failed after about 4 years so I had to replace them (way out of warranty). That meant cutting a little more off of the factory wiring. So, learning that lesson, for this new truck I bought a 3 pin crimp on wiring harness male and female kit and made it easy to disconnect the light.
Having a simple wiring connector also makes it easy if you need to take the light off to do any custom paint work.
I love everything about this light except for the fact that the website and packaging box clearly state that this product is "plug-n-play." It most definitely is not plug-n-play, and I had to splice the three wires in order to install it.
Looks much better then stock. It almost matches the factory tint in the back window of my F150, and blends very well with the blue paint, much better than the factory white one.
Make sure that when you install it, you put a couple dabs of silicone under the heads of the mounting screws.
Instalation consisted of cutting the wires off the old light and connecting up the new wires to the old. Pretty simple. The red leds are much quicker to light up. Brightness is probably a little brighter than factory. White leds for bed light does not seem as bright, but not bad. Quality seems a little less than factory. I hoping the plastic lens hold up over time. Pretty happy overall with the product after two weeks
I question the desc. of the item i ordered its not black.... its smoke color..... even the box says black.... not so....there`s no black that fits my son`s 08 f150 fx2 truck
Quality of the product was extremely poor. You could see all the glue seams where the lens and housing were connected. I ended up sending it back and replacing it with the smoked lens version (REC-264124BK). This one was much better, plus the smoked lens helped to hide the glue imperfections mentioned earlier. However, installation is NOT a simple plug and play less than 60 second install as described... at least this is the case with my 2006 F-150. You have to actually remove the headliner inside the cab to even get to the plug to disconnect the factory installed light and connect the replacement. I found this out after several hours of looking for installation instructions online because the product did not come with any. In addition, Recon did not have downloadable installation instructions for my application... pretty funny given how popular F-150s are. All in all, I am a very dissatisfied customer and would never recommend this product, or any other Recon product, to anyone. The only good thing I can say is the RealTruck was fantastic with the replacement. I will remain a RealTruck customer, but will never again even look at a product with the Recon name on it...ever. I mean come on, who sells a product without instructions? We are not all auto machanics.
