• Truck Bed Terminology and Industry Lingo for Different Styles

When shopping for a new pickup truck terminology can become confusing.  Discerning the difference between different light duty truck types is difficult when each manufacturer creates their own naming system for their model lines.  Truck bed styles are particularly tricky, but knowing the industry lingo will help you determine if you are comparing apples to apples when price shopping for the best truck.

Everything from Chevrolet Silverados to Ford F-150s, even Dodge Dakotas, all have a terminology when it comes to the truck bed design and type their model exhibits.  There are two basic designs, but many automakers use different words for each design.

Standard Bed – These are also known as fleet side bed or a standard cargo box.  Available in many sizes, the standard bed mainly features the fender wells on the inside of the truck bed.  Normally they can’t be seen on the outside.

Style Side Bed – Also known as step side, sport side or flair side.  The fenders are on the outside with these truck beds and are now commonly referred to as the sport models of the industry.

These terms become important when researching price and overall value of the vehicle you plan on purchasing.  Essentially, you need to be assessing your cargo, hauling and storage needs over the lifetime of your vehicle.

Non-factory ad-ons such as tonneau covers, tool boxes and storage and other cargo needs also converge to help you judge your size needs.  So keep these factors in mind when searching online or at the dealership for your next new vehicle.  Used models qualify for these truck accessories and others such as nerf bars and bug shields as well.
