Truck Snow Plow Options
Finding and purchasing the perfect snow removal system for your truck is probably a little more involved than you first realized. With so many personal snow plow options to choose from, how does a person decide? Let’s take into consideration what features and functionality you’d like to get out of your plow.

Personal Truck Plows come with a variety of options including:

  • Easy attachment and removal
  • Front or rear hitch installation
  • Mount only installation
  • Hands on plow raising and lowering
  • Hydraulic plow raising and lowering
  • Hidden mount kits
  • Wireless plow positioning from inside the cab
  • Optional snow deflectors
  • All steel construction
  • Manually set angle position
  • … and many more!

These are just a fraction of the options you can get with the plows in our online inventory. Some truck snow plows ore small enough they can be lifted and handled entirely by one person, like the SnowSport HD Utility Snow Plow. Others, like the SnowBear BB100 Snow Plow have a bolt on mount that require more installation.

Blades are made from either heavy duty aluminum, steel or in some cases a rugged polymer. Most have heavy duty rubber edging on the sides and bottoms to protect the surfaces they are working on.

How do they work?
Some pickup plows normally have an adjustable push frame that allows the blade to move up and down over uneven terrain while you push across it. This ensures that while you are pushing the snow the blade adjusts to the landscape. When you reverse (using a front mount plow, for example) the blade releases and drops, allowing for the snow to remain where you piled it and to keep the blade from scraping in the opposite direction. This is sometimes called a ‘floating blade.’

Other truck snow plow blades require manual raising and lowering that can be done hydraulically and electrically from the cab of your truck. This differs from floating blades mainly because it doesn't require you to physically interact with the plow. All adjustments can be made from your 'command module' also known as your truck cab!

Most snowplow blades are manually, hydraulically or electronically adjustable for angle. This gives you the option of pushing the snow in the direction which you choose. When plowing, you would angle left, and then work from right to left. Angle right, then work from left to right to move snow to the outer most edge of where you wish to pile it up. You can also center the blade if you wish to push the snow directly in front of you.

Some blades require manual lifting to raise them for travel after your task is complete. Others have hydraulic or electronic features that do this task for you.

After lifting into the ‘resting’ position, some truck snow plows are large enough they WILL cover your headlights. While other pickup plows are safe for driving at night because their height does not interfere with your ability to use headlamps in the evening. Pickup SnowPlow Installation
The removal and permanency of the snowplow depends upon the particular product you choose. Some styles, mainly hitch mounted, allow for you to attach and remove them as needed. Due to their weight they can be handled fairly competently by a single person.

Other products are larger and require mounting kits that make the plow a more permanent seasonal fixture and it is not recommended that removal happen on a regular basis. Due to the weight of these plows, you may need additional help for team lifting during installation.

Styles of Truck Snow Plows
There are three different styles to choose from when it comes to purchasing a pickup snowplow. All three require a bit of installation on your end, but nothing that can’t be done with a little instruction reading and attention to detail.

  • Front Mount Pickup Snow Plow
This style mounts to the front end of your truck and installs with a simple front hitch or a mounting kit. Many of the snow plows RealTruck sells are front mount mainly because of their ease of use and the ability to see what you are pushing from a front view.
  • Rear Mount Pickup Snow Plow
Mounting to the rear of your truck, this snowplow is normally put into service to either push or pull snow to its intended destination. The ability to pull snow is what sets it apart from the front mounted styles. People also tell us repeatedly how great they are for clearing a path right out of the garage!

Snow Removal Tip: When pushing snow in a parking lot or a large driveway, move systematically from one side to another, continually pushing the snow to either the left or the right side of the lot. This will cut down on the number of times you need to pass the lot to build your piles on the side and will also cut down on your fuel consumption.

What our customers say about our Truck Snow Plows:

Brad Y. - Parks, AZ (bought the SnowBear BB200 Snow Plow)
The price of a good plow hurts but it pays for itself fast. This is my second Snow Bear plow. They are really good, durable plows. I use mine for my driveway and a couple miles of unmaintained, rural roads. The last one lived about 11 years of regular use in the winter before some parts started wearing out. Customer service and parts ordering couldn't be smoother. Then several parts started wearing out making it cost effective to replace the old worn out plow. I really got my moneys worth out of that old plow. This plow is bigger and fancier. It's the same quality I've come to expect from Snow Bear with some extras. It's a lot of money but snow plows are expensive and there's no way to get around that. This is the best buy around for the quality that you'll get. More popular brands run a few thousand higher and this plow does a great job for me for a fraction of the cost. The cheaper ones I found will only push a path out of my driveway and are much smaller. This Snow Bear looks really strong and perfect for what I'm going to use it for.

Martin C. - Amherst, OH (bought the SnowSport 180 Utility Snow Plow)
I had the opportunity to get a full winter of plowing in with the Snowsport 180. I can honestly say that it performed excellent. It took me only a few hours to install it and it only takes a minute to take on and off. I plowed my driveway along with my in-law's lot in about 25 minutes. Great Product and a excellent purchase.
