GMC Trucks – Leaders from the Start
The first GMC truck was seen at a New York Auto Show in 1912. In reality, they were Rapid and Reliance trucks. The GMC logo had been added to the trucks. By 1913 they were all moved to the GMC brand. During that time, all the trucks were battery powered. GMC offered nine models ranging between half ton and six ton capacity.
In 1914, the first trucks fully designed by GMC engineers were created. These were the Model 15’s and their capacity ranged from ¾ ton to 2 tons. In 1916 a great feet occurred with a man drove a GMC 1 ½ ton truck from Seattle to New York, then all the way back again. This was the first ever cross country trip for a truck in less than 32 days.
During the First World War, GMC was a huge provider of trucks to the Army. Most of these trucks were ambulances and troop carriers. Thus, during this time, production at the GM plant was mostly for war trucks and military vehicles.
What can be confusing to some people is the fact that Chevrolet and GM Trucks are basically the same except for the front grilles and nameplates. Over time, they have had a lot of different features, but they have stayed almost identical. This is due to the fact that during the early years of development the owners of GM acquired Chevrolet to compete against Ford.
