Autometer Ultra-Lite Series In-Dash Speedometers are available in two styles, electric and mechanical. The electric speedometer features a bright, visible, easy to read LCD odometer with trip odometer function, perfect for gauging long trips. Frequently Asked Questions

My electric speedometer registers speed when sitting still or with engine revs: If the speedometer registers speed with the engine running while the car is sitting still, you will first need to make sure that you have successfully completed the calibration procedure. If not, do so and that may solve the problem.
If calibration has been completed, check or run a new ground to the speedometer.
A faulty diode in the alternator can actually cause this symptom. If you rev the engine and the speedometer responds, then disconnect all wiring from the alternator. If the problem goes away, then replace your alternator or have it rebuilt. With only one diode bad in the alternator, you would not necessarily notice a charging system problem yet other than the crazy acting speedometer.  Routing of the signal wire past a high amperage power source or an ignition component may also cause this symptom. Re-route your wiring away from any of these sources.

Electronic Speedometer calibration made easy!
To calibrate your electronic speedometer:
1) With the power off, push and hold the calibration button (trip/reset button when equipped). While holding the button, start the vehicle and continue to hold the button until the pointer sweeps to full scale and stays at full scale. You may now release the button.
2) Drive to the beginning of a pre-marked 2 mile distance and come to a stop. It does not matter how far away it is to get to this pre-marked 2 mile distance. Do NOT shut the engine off. Push and release the button. The pointer will drop to half scale.
3) Drive the 2 mile distance. The pointer will remain at the half scale mark no matter what speed you drive. If the speedometer has a LCD display odometer, it will be normal to see it counting rapidly as it is receiving a speed signal. If you have to stop during the calibration, that is o.k. The speedometer is simply counting pulses during this time.
4) At the end of the 2 mile distance, come to a complete stop and push and release the button. The pointer will drop to 0 and the calibration is stored. You are now finished.
Remember the accuracy of your 2 mile distance will directly affect the accuracy of your speedometer.

I finished the calibration process and the pointer went to full scale instead of zero
This is most commonly caused by the speedometer not receiving a speed sensor signal during calibration. Check to make sure you have a wire going from the “SIG” terminal of the speedometer to the signal output of the vehicle speed sensor. Good soldered connections for this also help.
If all connections are good, then you may check the speed sensor output from your speed sensor. If you get no output from your speed sensor, you will then need to verify that it is being turned before you replace it. On 2-wire factory type speed sensors, if you are not using the sensor for a computer, then make sure that the 2nd wire on the speed sensor is grounded for proper operation. What speed sensor do I need to use an Auto Meter electric speedometer?
This answer depends largely on what transmission and vehicle you have. For some the answer is easy, for others it is not impossible, but just not as easy. Please read on.
Most factory equipped speed sensors will operate our speedometer. If you are running a late model transmission in an early vehicle with no computer, then that is o.k. You will have two wires on most factory speed sensors. Ground the low-side signal wire and run the hi-side signal wire to the speedometer and calibrate. It’s just that easy.
Most GM transmissions such as TH350, TH400, 700R4, TH200, &TH250’s may use the Auto Meter # 5291 speed sensor. This will simply thread onto the transmission in place of where the cable used to go. Some Chrysler, AMC, & Jeep transmissions may use the same sender. To know for sure, look to see how the cable attaches to the transmission. If it uses a large 7/8” threaded nut, that threads onto the transmission, then you can use the #5291.
Most Ford transmissions use a cable the pushes into the transmission and use a small retaining clamp to hold it in. For these models use a model # 5292 Auto Meter speed sensor. You will transfer the O-ring, speedometer gear and the gear retaining clip from the speedometer cable to the speed sensor, then install the sensor into the transmission. Just like the GM style, some Chrysler, AMC, and Jeep products may use a Ford style cable. You will have to look at your cable at the trans to see how it installs to know which version you have.
Now, for those of you who have something different than what we have addressed and do not have any type of factory speed sensor, there is still a solution. You may use a universal type of Shaft Speed Sensor, which can be found at many different Speedometer specialty shops. This would be the same type of speed sensor that many aftermarket cruise control systems have used over the years. Where can I purchase speedometer cables and how can I calibrate my speedometer?
Speedometer cables may be purchased at your local auto parts store. Auto Meter speedometers come with a standard 5/8" x 18 threaded cable input that requires a .104" sq. male drive. The speedometer is calibrated for a 1:1 drive ratio (1,000 RPM at 60 MPH input at the speedometer head.)
If the vehicle tire size and/or rear end differential are not stock, a different driven gear in the transmission may be required for speedometer accuracy. If a change in the driven gear is made, you very likely will also have to change the drive gear in the transmission to maintain the proper gear tooth arrangement. Another approach is to use a "correcting ratio" drive joint to adjust the speedometer input to 1,000 RPM at 60MPH. The ratio can be determined by comparing your speedometer reading against another car having an accurate speedometer and dividing the same speed (Accurate speed / Your speed = Ratio needed.) Auto parts stores or speedometer specialty shops (see above) carry "correcting ratio" drive joints.  Also, see electronic speedometers throughout our online catalog. These speedometers are programmable and feature push button calibration. They can be calibrated repeatedly with tire and gear changes. Senders are available to convert from mechanical take off or electronic sensor.

Auto Meter warrants to the original retail purchaser that this product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of thirty six (36) months from the date of original retail purchase. When Auto Meter determines a product failed due to defects in material or workmanship within this 36 month warranty period, the product will be repaired or replaced for the original retail purchaser only. This warranty is limited to the repair or replacement of parts.
