|These are a decent enough quality, and for the Ford Explorer did not require any drilling to mount. However the front bracket is poorly designed, with only one anchor point, with no extension to the back of the bracket for leverage to support any weight that is applied to the step surface. I ended up drilling an additional hole in the bracket and tapping the body to receive an additional bolt. Also, I realize that Ford only provides two anchor points (front and back), poor design by Ford, but it really needs a middle bracket to properly support weight being applied to the running board. I tried to acquire an additional front bracket to drill and mount in the middle, but was unable to purchase from either Real Truck or from the manufacturer. The brackets already display some bending from weight applied entering the vehicle.|
Also the bolts that were provided to attach the bars to the brackets are flat headed square "T" bolts, which don't slide in channels, but act as regular bolts and where difficult to find a socket or wrench that would fit them. It was an odd sized head that only a 12-point 11/16 socket, or possibly a 12-point 17MM box end wrench would fit, but there is no room to swing a wrench, given that the bolt was in the narrow bracket channel. Very strange choice for the bolts in this situation.
When I purchased these, the indication from the illustration, was that there were 3 brackets per side. The description does not specifically indicate how many were being shipped, this is Real Truck's fault for inadequate specifications. To my dismay, there were only two per side, and inadequate at that.
I wish I had purchased the IONIC running boards, they are a bit more expensive, and they require drilling to install, but they come with three specially designed brackets per side, and are a much better mounting system overall, which would better support a load. Go watch the mounting video before making your choice, you will see what I mean.
I may sell mine on ebay or craig's list and buy the IONICs.
